Lim Jong-seong’s Second Unification Church Cash Investigation

Former Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Lim Jong-seong, who faces allegations of receiving tens of millions of won in cash and gifts from the Unification Church, appeared before the joint police-prosecutors investigation headquarters (headed by Chief Prosecutor Kim Tae-hoon of the Daejeon High Prosecutors’ Office) on the 24th. This marks the second time Lim has been investigated by the joint team.
Lim, a suspect in alleged violations of the Political Funds Act, has been under investigation by the joint team since 9 a.m. that day. He is accused of receiving cash and gifts worth 30 million Korean won from the Unification Church ahead of the April 2020 general election.
In the first investigation, which took place on the 11th, the joint team intensively questioned Lim about the ‘TM (True Mother) Special Report’ document. The document contains reports made by former Unification Church head Yun Young-ho to Chairman Han Hak-ja, and it mentions Lim’s name 19 times, indicating close exchanges between Lim and the Unification Church. Lim’s side denied the connection, stating, “There are too many inconsistencies” and “There are many exaggerated expressions made by Yun Young-ho in an attempt to show excessive loyalty.”
On that day, the joint team plans to begin a full-scale investigation into Lim’s alleged receipt of cash and gifts. The joint team is accelerating related investigations, including summoning former United Future Party Rep. Kim Kyu-hwan on the 25th. Legal circles anticipate that Rep. Chun Jae-soo, another suspect, will also be summoned for questioning soon.
Earlier, Yun Young-ho testified to Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki in August last year that he provided cash and gifts to Lim, former Rep. Kim, and another former lawmaker with the intention of “building good relationships not only with the People Power Party but also with politicians from both ruling and opposition parties.”
