Leah Remini weirdly refused to play hide and seek with Tom Cruise: “I thought he was joking”

What’s weirder than Tom Cruise, a grown man, insisting that another actor plays hide and seek with him despite their clear protestations? The answer, of course, is Will Smith being there, too.
It sounds batshit insane, and that’s because it is. Why on earth would one of the biggest movie stars on the planet indulge himself in a game that nobody plays after they’ve left their childhood behind, and why on earth would another one of the biggest movie stars on the planet be so happy to join him?
If you’ve got the lingering feeling that the answer may have something to do with Scientology, then you’re not too far wide of the mark. L Ron Hubbard didn’t make it scripture that his followers play hide and seek, but for whatever reason, former member Leah Remini ended up caught in the middle.
While it should be pointed out in the name of posterity that Smith is not a confirmed Scientologist, he does know Cruise, even if he’s always been jealous of him. Remini was definitely a member for a long time, though, and she’s since become one of the organisation’s most outspoken critics.
According to the actor, arguably best known onscreen for starring opposite Kevin James on the sitcom King of Queens, and arguably best known offscreen for being a constant thorn in the side of the group she’d previously been with since childhood, Cruise’s mansion was the ideal place for adults to embrace their inner kid.
“At first I thought he was joking,” she admitted in her book, Troublemaker. “But, no, he literally wanted to play hide and seek with a bunch of grown-ups in what was probably close to a 7,000 square foot house on almost three full acres of secluded land.”
