Justin Welby faces mounting pressure to resign after damning Church abuse scandal report

The Archbishop of Canterbury is facing calls to resign in light of a damning report into abuse by a prolific child abuser associated with the Church of England.
A petition by members of the General Synon and Archbishop’s Council has amassed nearly 2,000 signatures, with respected vicars and clergymen slamming the Church of England chief for failures over the abuse by John Smyth.
The Change.org petition highlights that Mr Welby had a “personal and moral responsibility” to address the failings made by the church, something “failed to fulfil”.
The trio of senior vicars, including Revd. Dr Ian Paul, Revd Robert Thompson, and Revd. Marcus Walker, argue that given Mr Welby’s role in allowing the abuse to continue, they believe “that his continuing as the Archbishop of Canterbury is no longer tenable”.
“We must see change, for the sake of survivors, for the protection of the vulnerable, and for the good of the Church—and we share this determination across our traditions.
