A joint investigation team (JIT) probing alleged collusion between the Unification Church and Shincheonji, as well as ties to political figures, summoned and questioned a former bodyguard of Lee Man-hee, Shincheonji’s general director, on the 21st.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the JIT began questioning Lee Mo, a former member of the late director’s security detail known as the “Seven Lions,” as a reference witness at 10 a.m. that day. Lee Mo, who arrived at the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office around 9:57 a.m., stated regarding allegations of party membership, “I mainly followed instructions from the Youth Leader and regional faction heads,” adding, “I will submit the membership list today.”
The JIT plans to press Lee Mo on how he became aware of circumstances surrounding People Power Party membership sign-ups or fundraising for Shincheonji’s headquarters during his time guarding the director.
The JIT has continued to summon former Shincheonji executives for questioning. On the 19th, it investigated Choi Mo and Jo Mo, former regional faction heads who raised internal embezzlement allegations, and the previous day, it summoned Cha Mo, a former Shincheonji youth leader.
Shincheonji faces allegations that it systematically mobilized 100,000 believers to interfere in the People Power Party’s primaries in 2021. Additionally, the group is suspected of organizing its followers to join the party and influence internal primaries during the presidential elections that brought former Presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye to power.
