What began as a dream of harmonious community life gradually became a nightmare of abuse, the scale of which has taken decades to emerge.
More than half a century ago a group of idealistic Christians, led by firebrand preacher Noel Stanton, attempt to create a heaven on earth in rural Northamptonshire; but over time their idyll darkens.
Told by former members, their children and community Elders, this compelling series traces the story of the Jesus Fellowship from its hippy origins to the high-profile launch of the Jesus Army in the late 1980s, followed by its its eventual shocking collapse and demise in the last few years. In parallel a group of former members undergo specialist post-cult therapy to help them come to terms with their traumatic experiences growing up inside the community.
Daisy Scalchi, Head of Commissioning, Religion and Ethics, said: “This is a shocking tale of abuse hiding in plain sight. Those who have bravely shared their stories will, I hope, give voice not only to their own experiences but many others like them.”
Katie Buchanan, Executive Producer, said: “This is a compelling, urgent and timely story that it is only now coming to light thanks to the powerful testimony of survivors and former members.”
Inside The Cult Of The Jesus Army begins Sunday 27th July on BBC Two.
