Bedford man jailed and given 16-year restraining order for coercive control of partner

A Bedford man who subjected his partner to what a judge called “atrocious” abuse has been jailed and handed a 16-year restraining order after being found guilty of controlling and coercive behaviour.
Imjaz Khan, 49, of Oldfield Road, controlled and manipulated his victim throughout their relationship and even tried to continue his campaign of abuse after being remanded in custody, pressuring her to retract statements and lodge complaints against Bedfordshire Police.
Thanks to extensive support from officers in the force’s Emerald Team, the victim was able to provide evidence in court.
In May, Khan was convicted of controlling and coercive behaviour and perverting the course of justice. At Huntingdon Crown Court on Monday (14 July), he was sentenced to four years and two months in prison, with a 16-year restraining order imposed to protect the victim.
Judge Dhaliwal-Thomas told Khan: “Your behaviour towards the victim has been atrocious. You show little or no recognition of how your behaviour affects others. Your behaviour seems entrenched and shows a pattern of abusive behaviour towards female partners.”
