Bail granted for alleged NSW child groomer cult leader William ‘Little Pebble’ Kamm

An alleged NSW cult leader accused of grooming a child for more than a decade has been granted bail after his lawyer argued there was a “real question” as to whether prosecutors would be able to prove his intentions.

William “Little Pebble” Kamm has pleaded not guilty and is due to face a trial next June over five charges, including two alleged breaches of an extended supervision order, two counts of child grooming and one count of inciting a person into a sexual act in circumstances of aggravation.

According to the Crown’s case, the 75-year-old’s alleged grooming covered a lengthy period and much of it took place through an intermediary.

Mr Kamm’s barrister, Peter Lange SC, on Monday cited his client’s age and health issues — particularly his difficulty reading while in custody to help prepare for his case — in arguing for bail in the NSW Supreme Court.

Mr Lange said there was a “significant amount of material” including transcripts that formed part of the Crown’s case, which he characterised as “not a strong one”.

A key question at trial will be whether Mr Kamm was allegedly grooming the child for sexual activity once she turned 18.

Mr Lange argued there was not only a “dearth of evidence”, but “positive evidence” that pointed towards the intention being for any activity to occur after the age of 18.

“On the objective material, in circumstances where there was at no stage any physical contact, there is a real question as to whether the Crown can prove the requisite intention,” he told the judge.
