An alleged “cult” member accused of storming an Essex court to try and kidnap a coroner has claimed he was “doing what he was supposed to”. Matthew Martin took to the stand at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday (July 22) saying he was a “servant of the crown” and that he “didn’t even know” who Senior Coroner Lincoln Brookes, his alleged victim, was.
Martin along with three others are accused of conspiracy to kidnap the senior coroner of Essex in the months leading up to April 20, 2023, where the four entered Essex Coroners’ Court and tried to “condemn” the building.
Martin, 48, of Dennington Road, London, Sean Harper, 38, of Benfleet Park Road, Benfleet, and Shiza Harper, 45, also of Benfleet Park Road, and Mark Christopher, 58, of Claremont Road, London, all deny conspiracy to kidnap, false imprisonment and sending letters to cause distress. Additionally, Martin denies assault by beating and criminal damage in relation to an incident with a security guard on April 20 at coroners court which resulted in his glasses being broken.
