Police seize tens of millions of yen in raid on home of Aum guru Asahara’s family

SAITAMA (TR) – Law enforcement discovered tens of millions of yen in cash during a raid on the home of the wife and second son of executed Aum Shinrikyo cult founder Shoko Asahara earlier this year, reports Fuji News Network (July 16).
In March, the Public Security Intelligence Agency (PSIA) attempted to conduct an on-site inspection of the family’s condominium in Koshigaya City, but they refused to allow authorities inside, according to investigative sources.
Following the refusal, the PSIA filed a criminal complaint with the Saitama Prefectural Police. During the subsequent raid of the property in April, investigators uncovered the massive stash of cash.
Sources note that it is highly unusual for public security officials to target the private residence of the family of Asahara, whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto, for a compliance inspection.
Although the wife and second son are not officially members of Aleph, the primary successor group to the deadly doomsday cult, authorities suspect there is a covert movement underway to install the second son as the cult’s new leader.
Public security authorities are now urgently investigating the source of the seized funds to determine how the family amassed the cash.
