Woman scammed by online ‘psychic’ despite bank intervention

A woman in Liepāja lost 1,850 euros after falling for a scammer she found on TikTok who claimed to be a psychic. Although the bank intervened and cancelled the transaction, the woman still found a way to transfer the money. The State Police have launched a criminal investigation, police said on 8th May.
According to the State Police, the victim found an ad on TikTok offering psychic services, filled out a form, and was then called back and told that the psychic could help her, but she had to pay 150 euros immediately.
After some time, the psychic explained that the problems were serious, so she had to transfer 1,800 euros, which the woman did, but the bank intervened and cancelled the transaction.
However, once her online banking was unblocked, the woman transferred 900 euros to the scammers. When she attempted to transfer the second instalment of 950 euros, the bank cancelled the transaction again.
After the bank’s refusal, the woman still found a way to transfer the money. The woman was then asked for 7,000 euros, but she refused to continue working with the “psychic” and stopped answering calls. She then received a message from the scammers stating that she could recover the 1,850 euros she had paid but would need to transfer 200 euros. The woman made this transfer as well, but the transaction was cancelled because the recipient had exceeded their money-receiving limit.
An additional 300–400 euros was demanded to get her money back, but by then, the woman had become suspicious of fraud and stopped all correspondence and communication. The communication took place in Russian.
The State Police have initiated criminal proceedings regarding the incident.
