Celebrities arraigned on pyramid scheme charges, allowed bail

The Criminal Court on Monday released actor Yuranunt “Sam” Pamornmontri and actress Pechaya “Min” Wattanamontree on conditional bail of one-million-baht each after they were arraigned on charges arising from The iCon Group scandal.
They were arraigned by prosecutors on the recommendation of the Department of Special Investigation that both be prosecuted. They had earlier been detained and then excluded from charges laid in the case.
The court granted bail because the two defendants had been previously exempted from prosecution and did not appear to have tried to flee. The court prohibited them leaving Thailand without prior permission.
Mr Yuranunt and Ms Pechaya were charged with public fraud and running a pyramid scheme in connection with The iCon Group scandal. Prosecutors said they were more than mere presenters of The iCon Group’s
health and wellness products.
The two were among 19 suspects originally facing charges related to the Bangkok-based direct-sales firm, arising from complaints filed by nearly 7,000 people who said they were cheated out of more than 2 billion baht in total.
