Syracuse to pay survivors of clergy sexual abuse over $170 million

After almost six years, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse is paying survivors of clergy sexual abuse $176 million and will exit bankruptcy.
A judge approved the final decree that will lead to payments from a Victims Trust Fund that includes money from the Diocese, parishes and insurance carriers.
As part of the plan, the Diocese said it had instituted rigorous safe environment policies and protection protocols to prevent future abuse. It said 52,000 people have undergone training and background checks.
Bishop Douglas Lucia said he’s offering a heartfelt apology to those who suffered harm and for any past neglect in addressing it.
“Words cannot adequately express my feelings and sorrow regarding such heinous behavior,” Bishop Lucia said.
