Nicole Kidman’s almost two decade long marriage to Keith Urban is rumoured to be coming to an end, but before that, she was married to another famous face. Her 11 year marriage to Tom Cruise ended in a brutal divorce that took Nicole “a very long time to heal” from.
Nicole and Tom met in 1989 whilst film Days of Thunder. The stars fell in love on set and got married a year later. While married, they adopted two children, Bella and Connor. But after 11 years of marriage, Tom walked away from his relationship and filed for divorce in a move that left his wife in shock, as she was “very dependent” on him.
“I thought our life together was perfect,” Nicole said years later. “It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system. We were in a bubble, just the two of us. We became very dependent on one another. I was reeling with Tom. I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him…. I was totally smitten – I fell madly, passionately in love.”
She also said that she was naive to think the marriage would last, as she was only 23 when they wed. “I was a child, really, when I got married,” she said. “And I needed to grow up.”
Reports suggested the reason Tom left the marriage was because Nicole refused to be a part of the Church of Scientology. Former church spokesperson and board member Mike Rinder claimed in his book that the Church used various means to push the couple to break up, though this has not been confirmed.
