SHEBOYGAN – Madame Tuck glided down the theater aisles during the 1980s-themed Halloween show, donning dangly earrings, a gold sequin gown and red wig. She had just left a rainbow chiffon shawl on stage.

As she danced and lip synced to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” college students cheered and bopped in their seats in the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. For Madame Tuck, performing at the university Pride Center’s 2023 “Hallowqueen” show was an opportunity to be a mentor to LGBTQ+ youth, create an uplifting environment and spread love.

Zeke Mueller’s exploration and relationship with drag has changed over nearly a decade of performing as Madame Tuck. First, drag was a way to express creativity and explore being queer. He found community in a time of isolation. Now, Zeke, a Sheboygan resident, prefers performing for community or charitable events, where he can uplift LGBTQ+ youth.

“It makes people happy, it makes me happy,” Zeke said.

Zeke, 28, has experienced so much in “quarterlife,” a misunderstood and belittled stage of life between the ages of 20 and 40 critical for discovering self, meaning in the world and coping with existential and societal issues that psychotherapist and author Satya Doyle Byock explores in “Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood.”

Zeke left the Jehovah’s Witnesses, accepted his sexuality, bridged familial rifts, explored the art of drag, contended with religious and spiritual beliefs, found a sense of self, and settled into a satisfying career as a dog groomer.

Now, Zeke wants to be happy and live peacefully, achieving a focus on contentment that many can only hope to reach, and if they do, it’s later in life.
